Give scratching a place
Start by watching how your cat scratches: upright against a surface, or low to the floor.
Match the scratching direction

Check space and stability
A post should allow a full stretch and stand steadily. Check the assembled dimensions and base footprint. Place it on a level surface and inspect it as it wears.
Introduce it where it makes sense
Place a scratcher near a resting spot or an area your cat already chooses. Allow your cat to investigate and reward use. Avoid moving their paws over it.
Keep it usable
Brush away loose debris and replace heavily worn or unstable items. Keep cardboard scratchers dry.
